      Milk Thistle health benefits

      Milk Thistle, Silybum marianum or Carduus marianus, sometimes called St Mary's thistle has a long tradition of being very effective in alleviating symptoms of liver disease, other liver complaints such as jaundice, gallstone formation and gallbladder problems. Many people also use its liver restorative powers as a hangover cure after consuming excess alcohol.

      The herb milk thistle can be used to treat:


      Liver damage or disease including abnormal function and fatty liver

      Exposure to pollutants and conventional drugs

      Gallstone formation

      Gallbladder problems

      Side effects and contraindications

      No contraindications are known. While there are no known side effects for pregnant and breast feeding women, it is generally advised that they should only take herbal remedies under advice from a qualified practitioner.

      One study using concentrated extract found less than 1% of patients were affected with mild gastrointestinal complaints or a mild laxative effect.

      Adult tincture dosage:

      Based on herb to alcohol ratio of 1:3 take 5ml to 8ml three times a day
