      Horsetail is used by herbal practitioners as a genito-urinary tonic.

      Horsetail can be used for:

      Urinary tract infections, such as cystitis and urethritis

      Inflammation and bleeding in the urinary system

      Benign enlargement of the prostate

      Prostatitis

      Frequent urination

      Bedwetting in children

      Renal colic

      Renal (kidney) stones

      Side effects

      Generally considered safe but avoid copious fluid intake if oedema due to impaired cardiac or renal function exists

      Active compounds

      Silicic acid, saponins, flavone glycosides, organic acids.

      Horsetail is an excellent astringent for the genito-urinary system, reducing bleeding and healing wounds due to the high silica content.  It tones the urinary tract, helpful in the treatment of incontinence and bedwetting.  It is specific in the treatment of inflammation or benign enlargement of the prostate gland.

      Tincture dose

      Adult dose:                 0.5 - 2mls three times a day. 

      Children’s dose:        0.4 – 0.6mls three times a day.
